Sculptural, elemental, and deeply rooted in tradition, the PALO SANTO Altar Vessel is a contemporary interpretation of ancestral forms once created for ritual and offering. Selected for The Designer’s Courtyard, its generous proportions, earthen surface, and hand-formed silhouette give it the presence of an artifact discovered and collected over time.
An original PALO SANTO design, each vessel is formed entirely by hand in Oaxaca by women artisans using techniques passed through generations. No molds are used; every piece is shaped individually, preserving the subtle irregularities and traces of the maker that distinguish true handcraft.
Once formed, the vessel is fired over an open flame, allowing smoke, fire, clay, and heat to determine its final character. Tonal shifts, darkened markings, surface variations, and textural imperfections emerge naturally during firing, ensuring that no two vessels are exactly alike.
Display the Altar Vessel unadorned as a sculptural object, or style it with a restrained arrangement of branches or seasonal botanicals. Its quiet monumentality makes it particularly striking on an aged console, limestone pedestal, library table, or within a collected architectural interior.
